In this article, you'll learn how to set your business's default language and how it affects staff, clients, notifications, and receipts.
If you manage your business's setup settings, you can choose a default language for your entire business. This ensures that staff, clients, notifications, and receipts all appear consistently in either English or Français. This is especially important for businesses operating in French-language markets, such as Quebec, where presenting your platform in French by default is required for compliance.
When you set a default language, it automatically applies to everyone who interacts with your business on the web. This includes signed-in staff members, signed-in clients, and visitors who haven't signed in yet (such as clients browsing your public store, booking widgets, sign-up forms, or kiosk). A language switcher is always visible on these surfaces so anyone can switch if they prefer.
Before you begin
Only business owners or staff members with the Edit business information permission can access and modify settings under Setup > Business > General Information.
The Achieve Client App and Elevate Staff App interfaces are not affected by this setting at this time. Push notification content is affected, since notifications are generated by WellnessLiving's system.
How the default language works
The language a person sees is determined by the following rules:
If a staff member or client has manually selected a language for your business, their personal choice is always used. This applies even if you later change the business default.
If a staff member or client has never manually selected a language, they see whatever language is currently set as your business default.
Language preferences are saved per user, per business. A staff member or client who belongs to multiple businesses can have a different language preference at each one.
Visitors who aren't signed in (public store, booking widgets, sign-up forms, kiosk mode) always see the business default language, with the option to switch manually.
Example: Your business is set to Français as the default. A client who has never changed their language will see your Client Portal, booking pages, and all notifications in French. A staff member who previously switched to English will continue to see English. Your default change won't affect them.
How language affects notifications and receipts
Notifications (email, SMS, and in-app push) and purchase receipts follow the same language rules:
Email, SMS, and push notifications are sent in the recipient's effective language. This means their personal language choice if they've set one, or your business default if they haven't.
Email receipts follow the recipient's effective language.
Printed receipts (A4 and receipt printer) always use your current business default language.
Reprinted receipts render in your current business default language at the time of reprinting, regardless of the language used when the receipt was originally issued.
If a client or lead has no language preference on file, they receive communications in your business default language.
Set your business default language
To set your business default language:
Open the App Drawer
then click View All > Setup > Business > General Information.
Find the Default Language setting.
Select either English or Français.
Click Save.
Your new default language will apply immediately to all users who haven't made a manual language selection for your business.
